AFI Honors Hangover, Mad Men and Hurt Locker
Originally posted 12/14/2009 07:30AM
The American Film Institute has announced its list of Top 10 movies and TV shows of 2009, offering up some surprises in the process. Then again, few are disputing that The Hangover may be one of the funniest movies ever made.
With that in mind, AFI honors on the big screen went to Coraline, The Hangover, The Hurt Locker, The Messenger, Precious, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Sugar, Up and Up in the Air.
Conspicuously absent from the list was Titanic director James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar – the most expensive movie ever made, though its studio denies the $500-million price tag that's been attached to it.
Meanwhile, the AFI's announcement on Sunday coincided with that of the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn., which named The Hurt Locker its best picture of the year.

Film Critics Agree: Mo'Nique, The Hurt Locker Best of 2009
Originally posted 12/13/2009 06:00PM
The early indications are that this awards season is going to be a very busy one for Mo'Nique.
The comedian's terrifying portrayal of a mother on the brink in the Oprah Winfrey-produced, independent film Precious won best supporting actress from both the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Boston Society of Film Critics.
The critics also agreed on best film of the year: The Hurt Locker, a nerve-rattling drama about an elite army bomb squad operating in Iraq. They both named its director, Kathryn Bigelow, best director, beating among others, her ex-husband, Avatar director James Cameron.

Mike Myers, Paris Hilton Take Razzies Triple Crowns
Originally posted 02/22/2009 12:00PM
Not only were they this year's leading nominees, but Mike Myers and Paris Hilton were also the top "winners" at Saturday's Razzies, dis-honoring Hollywood worst achievements of the past year in an offbeat ceremony traditionally held a day before the Oscars.
Not that either attended the ceremony, but both the comic actor and the hotel heiress nabbed three Golden Raspberry Awards: Meyers, because his The Love Guru was the worst picture; he was the worst actor in it; and he co-wrote the script, selected as worst of the year.
Hilton's citations were for worst actress for The Hottie and the Nottie, worst supporting actress for Repo! The Genetic Opera and worst screen couple with either of her Hottie costars, Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore.

Mickey Rourke Wins, Gives Rambling Speech at Spirit Awards
Originally posted 02/21/2009 11:15PM
Comeback star Mickey Rourke got a standing ovation after giving a riotous, decidedly uncensored acceptance speech for winning the best actor award at the Spirit Awards on Saturday.
The Wrestler star, 56, dedicated the trophy to his beloved Chihuahua, Loki, who passed away last week. "I've just gotten thousands of letters from strangers and people that know me about my dog that died six days ago, Loki. This is for you, baby," said the actor, who has been riding a career resurgence thanks to his role as a washed-up prizefighter in the drama.
He gave an extended shout-out to his friend, actor Eric Roberts, calling Roberts "probably the best actor I have ever worked with. I don't know why in the last 15 years, no one has given him the chance to show his s--- again."
Roberts, the brother of Julia Roberts and father of Emma Roberts, has enjoyed a bit of a career resurgence with appearances in the The Dark Knight and Heroes. He was sitting in the audience and shouted to Rourke, "Accept your award!"
Rourke also thanked the film's director, Darren Aronofsky, and his costar, Marisa Tomei, whose name he momentarily forgot.
"Not many girls can climb the pole," said Rourke, referring to Tomei's role as a stripper in the movie. "She climbed the pole, and she did it well."

Kim Kardashian: Thanks for the Razzie Nomination!
Originally posted 01/21/2009 06:25PM
For Kim Kardashian, it's great just to be nominated – even if it's for a Razzie.
"I'm having a really good laugh," the actress writes on her blog. "I had so much fun filming Disaster Movie and giggled the entire time during the shoot."
The reality star, 28, adds, "There is steep competition in my 'worst supporting actress' category, I have to admit ... including my fantastic co-star Carmen Electra (you go girl!) Leelee Sobieski (what a surprise!), Jenny McCarthy (really?) and Paris Hilton (who could technically sweep this year's awards with a whopping three nominations)."
She ends her post with an emphatic "LOL!"

Critics: Anne Hathaway Ties with Idol Meryl Streep
Originally posted 01/09/2009 09:35AM
Slumdog Millionaire cleaned up at this year's Critics' Choice Awards, but it was Anne Hathaway who got twice the thrill by tying for best actress with one of her all-time role models.
"Meryl [Streep] is my idol," Hathaway – winner for her role in Rachel Getting Married – said backstage at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium Thursday night. "To win with my idol who I was nominated against is amazing. I'm so thrilled for her and I'm very thrilled for myself, too." Streep shared the best-actress win for her work as a nun in Doubt.
Hathaway told PEOPLE it is "overwhelming" to be recognized by critics and peers with so many nominations this awards season – accolades she expected it would take much longer to rack up.
