Milk Leads New York Critics Awards | Sean Penn
Milk soaked up some more awards-season glory on Wednesday, being named best film by the New York Film Critics Circle.

Sean Penn, who stars in the biopic as '70s gay-rights leader Harvey Milk, was named best actor, and Josh Brolin won best supporting actor for his role as the assassin in the movie, the Associated Press reports.

The New York group concurred with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, which named Penn best actor on Tuesday.

In other categories, the New Yorkers picked Sally Hawkins as best actress for her performance in Happy-Go-Lucky. That film's director, Mike Leigh, was also honored.

Best supporting actress went to Penélopé Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Screenwriter Jenny Lumet won for her script to Rachel Getting Married, and WALL-E was named best animated film.

The New York Circle, a group of 33 critics, will hold its awards ceremony Jan. 5 in New York.
