A quick note to any salesmen hoping to unload a home security system on Private Practice star Taye Diggs: He doesn't need one.

Last night, after returning to his Los Angeles home from the Screen Actors Guild Awards with his wife Idina Menzel at 11:20 p.m., Diggs discovered a burglar in his garage. The intruder – first reported on by TMZ and later identified as Hassan Juma, 20 – attempted to flee, but didn't get very far.

"The suspect tried to run away, but [Diggs] chased him down the street and was able to detain him until police arrived," LAPD spokesman Richard French tells PEOPLE. "At this time, I don't know exactly what he did to the suspect to detain him."

Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts Say Red Carpet Is No Date Night

Originally posted 01/28/2013 12:25PM

Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts do enjoy stepping out to an awards show – but it's not exactly a romantic evening away from the kids.

"It's not really what I would call a date night. It's a good room of people," Watts, 44, told PEOPLE Sunday on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she was a nominee for outstanding female lead actor for her role in the film The Impossible.

"It's great seeing my wife dressed up," Schreiber, 45, said, after being asked about how fabulous she looked, sparkling in a strapless gown by Marchesa, set off with Christian Louboutin heels, a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch and Fabergé earrings.

Downton Abbey's Downstairs Cast Dresses Up

On the screen, Downton Abbey's downstairs house staff are decidedly unglamorous and dressed to reflect their life's station. But at the SAG Awards Sunday night, where they won for best TV cast, the actors said they were thrilled to be made up and presenting themselves as red-carpet ready.

"It's bliss. It really is nice to have more than 10 minutes spent on your face," said actress Phyllis Logan, who plays stoic Mrs. Hughes, the head maid.

Added Amy Nuttall, who plays Ethel, the housemaid turned prostitute: We all get costume and hair and makeup envy of the upstairs girls. They all look immaculate and fresh, and we're all made to look tired."

Originally posted 01/27/2013 09:20PM

Today, she's one of the world's sexiest stars. But Sofia Vergara wasn't quite as celebrated for her curves early in her career.

The Modern Family actress was among a handful of actors who kicked off Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards with personal stories about how they got started in the business. Vergara, 40, joked about her famous figure.

"I grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia, in a very traditional Catholic home," she said. "My father told me that if I ever did anything artistic, I was going to look like a hooker. I told him, 'With these huge boobs that I inherited from your mother, I already look like a hooker!' "

Actresses don't usually like to talk about weight gain, but Claire Danes was more than happy to Sunday evening. Of course, the topic of discussion was her 6-week-old son Cyrus Michael Christopher.

"He's six weeks and getting fat. It's very exciting. All that time on the boob is starting to result in growth," the Homeland star, 33, told Giuliana Rancic on E!'s Live from the Red Carpet at the SAG Awards.

"He's getting rolls ... thank goodness they've arrived. He's starting to smile a little bit and he kind of knows I exist," she added. "That's reassuring – that feedback is amazing."

Dick Van Dyke: New Wife, New Life!

Originally posted 01/27/2013 11:00AM

For much of his career, Dick Van Dyke was known for his youthful energy. So it's little wonder that when the Mary Poppins actor turned 87 last December, he and wife Arlene celebrated with a trip to Disneyland.

"What a kick!" says Van Dyke, recounting palling around with Mickey Mouse and receiving a serenade from the L.A. Philharmonic. "We were treated like royalty."

There's more adulation in store for him Jan. 27, when the Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis Murder star will receive the Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (airing on TNT and TBS). "This was a surprise," he confesses. "People think of me as a song and dance entertainer. To be accepted by my peers as an actor is really a thrill."
