The Wizard of Oz Effect

Celebrating its 75th anniversary at the Oscars, count down the many ways the classic has shaped music, movies and more

Since Judy Garland set off to see the wizard 75 years ago in the 1939 adaptation of L. Frank Baum's 1900 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the story of Dorothy Gale has lured other filmmakers hoping to make similar movie magic. Journey Back to Oz, an animated sequel starring Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli, was released in 1974. Other Oz-inspired films include the Michael Jackson-led musical adaptation The Wiz (1978) to, most recently, 2013's Oz the Great and Powerful, starring Mila Kunis, James Franco and Michelle Williams.
