Behind the Movie Stars: The Inspirational Stories of the Nominees

From Jared's rocking return to films to Lupita's award-winning movie debut, see how these actors are redefining themselves and making Hollywood history

When Jared Leto decided to take time off from the big screen to tour with his rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, it seemed he had left Hollywood behind. That all changed when he landed the role of a lifetime in Dallas Buyers Club, portraying sweet-natured transsexual AIDS patient Rayon. He lost 30 lbs. for the part and his performance earned him a SAG Award, a Golden Globe, a Critics' Choice Award and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. "I knew there was another dream out there for me," said Leto, 42, who previously appeared on TV's My So-Called Life and in films like Girl, Interrupted and Panic Room. Now he's back and hotter than ever (thanks in part to that sexy man bun).
