Before playing Minny in The Help, which earned Spencer a Golden Globe award and SAG nomination, the actress was no household name despite having worked in Hollywood for more than 16 years. "If you build it, they will come, and that's what I'm doing, one brick at a time," Spencer told the Los Angeles Times of her career, which draws comparisons to fellow comedic actress Mo'Nique, whose serious turn in 2009's Precious won her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
