Asked on Saturday at the Independent Spirit Awards what he was doing to prepare for the Academy Awards the following night, Jared Leto responded, "Strenuous lovemaking."
Leto, who picked up a best supporting actor award for Dallas Buyers Club, and is also in the running to be Oscar's Best Supporting Actor, cracked the joke before adding in all apparent seriousness that he was going to "sleep, relax, eat a good meal, breathe deep and enjoy the party."
Responding to a question about the first time he read the script for Dallas Buyers Club, Leto said, "I had no idea the script was going to turn into such a special film. I had hoped. And the role was wonderful."
"I've mostly made art-house independent films, and they can break your heart, because they don't always turn out the way that you hoped they would," Leto continued. "The odds are always against it. They're impossible to finance, impossible to market, impossible, impossible, impossible."
"So when they do work and they connect with people, it's really a wonderful and beautiful thing that happens."
Leto struck a less heartfelt note in his acceptance speech at the Audi and Dark Horse Wine-sponsored Indies, jokingly referring to Lupita Nyong'o as "my future ex-wife."
