"I think it's got a nice ring to it. It's a wonderful thing to have happen, especially for not having made a film for six years," the actor told PEOPLE Thursday, shortly after learning of his Oscar nomination for his portrayal of transgender woman Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. "To return with this kind of love and support is unexpected. It's absolutely insane!"
On Sunday, Leto, 42, took home the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a motion picture, drama, which he called "phenomenal," adding: "To get this nomination, I’ve never dreamed that this would happen. I'm really happy and honored. It's great!"
Leto's costar, Matthew McConaughey – who dropped down to 135 lbs. to play Ron Woodroof – won the Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture, drama.
And as for good luck charms?
"I have a lock of Daniel Day-Lewis's hair and Marlon Brando's toenails as my good-luck charms," he jokingly told PEOPLE in December. "I figure that should do the trick. One in each pocket and I should be fine. No, I don't have any [good-luck charms]."
