Google Traffic Helps Predict Grammy Award Winners

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday will feature performances by Beyoncé, Daft Punk and Stevie Wonder, plus a Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunion. Before the big show kicks off and the awards are handed out, we turned to Google for some insight on who the night's big winners will be.

While this year's Grammys have stiff competition in many categories – album of the year alone features Taylor Swift going up against Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Daft Punk – your predictions no longer need to be made with an iPod and a dartboard.

Thanks to Google's stats on YouTube views, Google Play Music streaming and search history, it's easier than ever to make educated guesses when it comes to who will take home a Grammy Award.

Before you fill out your ballot, take a look at the predictions Google is making.


The Nominees:

"Get Lucky" - Daft Punk featuring Pharrell Williams & Nile Rodgers
"Royals" - Lorde
"Locked Out of Heaven" - Bruno Mars
"Blurred Lines" - Robin Thicke featuring T.I. & Pharrell
"Radioactive" - Imagine Dragons

Prediction: "Blurred Lines" - Robin Thicke featuring T.I. & Pharrell

Based on YouTube views, there is little doubt that Robin Thicke will take home the trophy. The racy and controversial ""Blurred Lines"" video has racked up over 257 million views, far surpassing the other nominees. His closest contender is Bruno Mars, whose "Locked Out of Heaven" video has been seen 228 million times.

Prediction: The Heist - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

This prediction was made by looking at Google Play Music stats, and there was no holding back Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's album The Heist. From "Can’t Hold Us" and "Thrift Shop" to "Same Love" and "White Walls," this album was filled to the brim with hit singles.

Prediction: Kendrick Lamar

This year's best new artist category features incredible talent across all genres with indie electro-rocker James Blake going up against rising country star Kacey Musgraves, British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, and rappers Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. So who was the most searched for artist in the category? Lamar. The up-and-coming rapper topped the Google search charts as new fans rushed to find out about the artist and his excellent debut album, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, which is nominated for album of the year.
