Awards season is in full swing and this year’s frontrunners are already becoming obvious – in England as well as America.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts have announced the new nominees, including, Golden Globe winnersGeorge Clooney, Jean Dujardin, Michelle Williams and Meryl Streep.

Meanwhile, the silent, black-and-white homage The Artist is quickly becoming the film to beat, leading the BAFTAs with 12 nominations, including best film, as well as acting nods for its two stars, Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Joining Dujardin and Clooney (The Descendants) in the best actor category are Michael Fassbender (Shame), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Brad Pitt (Moneyball).



Streep and Williams will go head to head for best actress for their portrayals of Margaret Thatcher and Marilyn Monroe in The Iron Lady and My Week with Marilyn, respectively. Rounding out the category are Bejo, Viola Davis (The Help) and Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin).

Golden Globe winners Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer are among those vying for supporting actor and actress awards, for Beginners and The Help.

Receiving the organization's Academy Fellowship this year will be Martin Scorsese, who is also up for best director for Hugo.

Golden Globe winners The Artist and The Descendants were both nominated for best picture, along with Drive, The Help and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

The BAFTA Awards will be held at the Royal Opera House in London on Feb. 12.
