For her 56th birthday, went all out: She brought home two new family members. “I want you to meet my two new babies,” she said as she introduced the rescued springer spaniel siblings to her audience. Say hello to the good life, Sunny and Lauren!
In 2005, Oprah brought home three golden retriever puppies. “I thought we’d grow old together,” she wrote. Sadly, two years later, Oprah lost Gracie in a tragic accident when the pup choked on a ball while out on a walk.
Perhaps more famous than Solomon was Sophie, the black cocker spaniel who joined the family in 1995. Oprah called Sophie “the true love in my life,” and the pooch went everywhere with Mom – to the hair salon, to the dog park and especially to work. In 2008, at age 13, Sophie died of kidney failure.
In 2009, Oprah adopted a blonde cocker spaniel named Sadie (pictured upper left) from PAWS Chicago, a no-kill shelter. Following an introduction on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Sadie’s brother Ivan found a home with Oprah, too. She later found out that both dogs had parvovirus. Ivan didn’t make it, but Sadie survived, and has been a thriving member of the Winfrey household ever since.
Among Oprah’s current five dogs – Luke, Layla, Sunny, Lauren and Sadie – there’s only one who gets to come to work everyday, and that’s Sadie. “She’s the mascot for Harpo,” Oprah said. “She is my calming mechanism.” In exchange, Oprah prepares Sadie’s meals and pays for her acupuncture treatments.
