Sawyer Sweeten Mourned: TV Dad Ray Romano's 'Heart Breaks' for 'a Wonderful and Sweet Kid'

Following his suicide at the age of 19, Sawyer Sweeten’s family and Everybody Loves Raymond costars have spoken out about the loss.

“I’m shocked and terribly saddened by the news about Sawyer,” said Sweeten’s TV dad, Ray Romano, in a statement released to PEOPLE. “He was a wonderful and sweet kid to be around. Just a great energy whenever he was there. My heart breaks for him, his family and his friends during this very difficult time.”

Ray and Anna Romano Give Back After Her Breast Cancer Fight

When Ray Romano’s wife of 24 years, Anna, was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer, the couple immediately began making calls to doctors near their Los Angeles-area home.

“We were blessed and didn’t have to worry, ‘Does insurance cover this?’ ” Ray recalls of the experience. “We want to give that [peace of mind] to other women.”

So, last year, after her treatment ended and she began her five-year tamoxifen prescription, Anna began researching philanthropies that she and her husband could adopt as their own.

After saying goodbye to Everybody Loves Raymond last year, Ray Romano has settled back into what made him a success: family life. Wife Anna is “happy to have me home,” says Romano, 48, who plays woolly mammoth Manny in Ice Age: The Meltdown. “But there are times where she just wishes that I was out.” When he’s not getting in the way of making dinner, Romano is getting the kids ready for school (“We literally drag them out of the bed,” he says), watching baseball games and worrying over his 15-year-old daughter Alexandra’s interest in boys.

Ray Romano, who is reprising his role as a wooly mammoth for Ice Age: The Meltdown, says he had a bit of meltdown of his own after ending the nine-year run of Everybody Loves Raymond.

“It’s weird. It was hard. It’s hard,” he said of his post Raymond career. “All of a sudden I had all this free time and I was excited, but then after about three or four months it’s like you lost a family member There’s a sense of loss.”
