Evan Lysacek Won't Compete at Sochi Olympics Due to Injury

Gold medalist Evan Lysacek was emotional as he revealed on the Today show on Tuesday that he won’t be setting his sights on the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, in February.

“It’s very difficult for me to say that, but my road to Sochi ends here,” the figure skater told Matt Lauer.

When skating rivals Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir were battling for a spot on the Olympic podium at the Vancouver Winter Games in February, Weir remarked that showdown would be a great “catfight.”

The dust-up intensified this week off the ice as Olympic gold medalist Lysacek, competing on Dancing with the Stars, and Weir, a three-time U.S. Champion, traded slurs and barbs.

“We are at war,” Weir told PEOPLE on Thursday. “My claws are out.”

Evan Lysacek & Nastia Liukin 'Really Close' Friends

On his way to becoming the first U.S. man to win figure skating gold in 22 years, Evan Lysacek had a little help from another Olympic gold medalist – gymnast Nastia Liukin.

The pair – who met in October 2008 in Rapid City, S.D., while performing on the NBC special Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular – have been close friends since last summer.
