And while most are familiar with Perry for her eternal hit “What’s Up?” with 4 Non Blondes, she’s had an extensive career as a songwriter and producer for other artists as well.
Here are five songs she wrote or co-wrote that you almost certainly know, even if you didn’t know Perry was the power behind the throne.
1. Pink, ‘Get the Party Started’
Perry and Pink’s collaborations were all over Pink’s 2001 album Missundaztood. Perry wrote two of the albums tracks (including the above) and co-wrote seven more.
2. Christina Aguilera, ‘Beautiful’
Aguilera’s ode to self-acceptance was penned entirely by Perry, who co-wrote three other tunes on Aguilera’s 2002 album, Stripped.
3. Courtney Love, ‘Mono’
While Love’s 2004 album America’s Sweetheart was largely overshadowed by her well-documented personal issues, “Mono,” co-written by Perry (as well as Love’s former bandmate Patty Schemel and her brother Larry), rose to No. 18 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
4. Gwen Stefani, ‘What You Waiting For?’
Gwen Stefani’s grammatically infuriating hit from 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. was co-written by Perry, who co-wrote two other tracks on Stefani’s breakout solo album.
5. Kelly Osbourne, ‘One Word’
A dramatic departure from Osbourne’s previous sound, the Perry-penned “One Word” was the first and only single from Osbourne’s 2005 album, Sleeping in the Nothing. It hit No. 1 on the US Hot Dance Chart, and made it to No. 9 on the Spanish and Portuguese Singles Charts.
