It’s been 10 years since the series finale of Sex and the City aired Feb. 22, 2004, which was many, many cosmopolitans ago.
We’ve since filled the void with shows like Girls, hair accessories that aren’t scrunchies and the aforementioned cocktails (not to mention two follow-up films). But we’ll never forget the HBO rom-sitcom, which followed the ultimate N.Y.C. core-four – Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) – through a dizzying world of guys, 6-inch heels and perfectly phrased one-liners.
While we have mostly given up on Mr. Big slipping a pair of glass Manolo slippers onto our feet, we’re still living the lessons we learned from the show’s leading lady, Ms. Bradshaw. These words of wisdom hold true today … even if her impossibly chic Upper East Side apartment is no longer rent-controlled.
Lesson No. 1: Let it go
Lesson No. 2: Treat yourself – you deserve it
Lesson No. 3: Wait for the person who loves you for you
Lesson No. 4: Nobody – not even Kate Middleton – is perfect
Lesson No. 5: It’s not what you’re doing; it’s whom you’re doing it with
Lesson No. 6: Don’t be afraid to try something – or someone – new
Lesson No. 7: Who said love was a simple concept?
Lesson No. 8: Ladies first, always
Lesson No. 9: Did we mention that you need to always go on with your bad self?
Lesson No. 10: Looking back is so not worth your time
Lesson No. 11: You matter, okay? You really, really do
