Whether viewers like it or not, Carrie Underwood is playing Maria von Trapp in the live TV version of The Sound of Music – and there are new rehearsal photos to prove it.
Underwood, 30, is pictured in a scene opposite Laura Benanti, who plays Elsa Schrader.
Taking on the role that originated with Julie Andrews hasn’t sat well with some fans of the 1965 film.

“I get hate Tweets and stuff like, ‘You’re not Julie Andrews!’ ” the former American Idolwinnerrecently said. “I know I’m not Julie. Nobody is and I would never pretend that I was I know my place.”
NBC stands by their decision to cast the country starlet.
“Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn’t be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, which plans to air the three-hour show (based on the original Broadway version) Dec. 5. “She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”
