His case will go to trial March 3, 2014, reports The New York Times.
Pistorius has been free on bail since February and will remain so, said Magistrate Desmond Nair.
At Monday s brief hearing in Pretoria, the state prosecution outlined its case, saying Pistorius shot Steenkamp on Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, as she cowered behind a locked bathroom door in his upscale residence.
Pistorius, 26, has claimed he thought an intruder had broken in and, with his limited mobility, he pulled his way to the bathroom with a gun.
At least three bullets hit Steenkamp, who would have turned 30 on Monday.
The Times reported that that before the hearing Pistorius and his family were engaged in prayer and he wept.
The mandatory sentence for premeditated murder in South Africa, where there is no death penalty, is 25 years (minimum) to life.
