You can’t go high brow all the time. Whether it’s a chick lit confection, a bodice-ripper or a zombie fest, just-for-fun books have their place. See what our staffers are unwinding with below – and let us know what you’re reading.

The Parenthood star’s first novel definitely has a chick lit feel, which I usually avoid like the plague, but I’ve been whipping through it while drinking tea and eating cookies. I love the characters and the gritty setting, New York circa 1995 (no cell phones!) Even though I know where the story’s headed, I’m enjoying the trip.

I’ll admit it: sometimes after a stressful day I like to relax with a glass of wine and a nice romance novel. The Great Escape, a followup to Call Me Irresistible, is a gem among bodice-rippers – intelligent, funny and hot enough to make you sigh. Instead of saying “I do,” Lucy Joran jilts her too-perfect groom at the altar and hooks up with “Panda,” a tough-looking stranger who’s not what he seems. It’s a wild ride.

Hettie, the protagonist of this self-published horror novel, is a zombie – a murder victim – who becomes reanimated digging her way out of her grave. She and a retired police detective end up fighting her killer, a ghoul who can wear the skins of others. Creepy characters, detailed descriptions and it’s short. If you like scary stuff, it’s a good one.
