When a book’s getting tons of buzz, we like to see what all the fuss is about.

This week’s staff picks include hugely praised short stories, a controversial look at women and work, and a British diet phenom just hitting our shores. Add your comments below – and let us know what you’re reading!

Lesley Messer, Staff Writer
Her pick: Tenth of December by George Saunders

Had it not been for my book club-mates, I probably wouldn’t be reading this collection right now – but I’m glad they’re making me. The stories are dark to say the least (in the first one, a young boy witnesses an attempted kidnapping), but they’re so artfully crafted that their heaviness doesn’t overwhelm.

Kristen Mascia, Staff Writer
Her pick: Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg

This book by the COO of Facebook is everywhere, and I think it deserves to be. Part feminist manifesto, part self-help, it looks at why there still aren’t enough of us women in leadership roles and suggests it’s partly our fault: we need to “lean in” and make ourselves heard. That (and the fact that most women don’t have Sandberg’s financial resources) is causing controversy. But Sandberg’s rekindled a vital conversation – something every working woman should appreciate.

Suzanne Zuckerman, Senior Writer
Her pick: The Fast Diet by Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer

I’m reading this buzzed-about British diet book, which we’re featuring in the magazine next week. It advocates intermittent fasting – limiting yourself to 500 calories a day two days a week while eating normally the rest of the time. Would I try it? Maybe. Did I eat chocolate chip cookies while reading it? Guilty!
