We know the CMT Music Awards had their share of wild moments on Wednesday night, but it turns out what happened after the show was even crazier.
According to James Van Der Beek, a get-together at a Nashville bar turned into an impromptu episode of The Voice thanks to a star-studded karaoke competition.
“I was handing off a drink, a song came on that I’d never heard before and a microphone was handed to me,” Van Der Beek told PEOPLE Saturday at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Brentwood, California. “Then Blake Shelton was coaching me through it note by note and I was on a table!”
Added Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, “[James] came back and was like, ‘Oh, by the way, I was just drunken karaoke-ing on a table and Blake Shelton was my coach!’ I said, ‘What? What?’”
For all its fun, though, Van Der Beek said his wasn’t even the performance of the night.
According to the actor, that honor goes to Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley for his rendition of Montell Jordan’s 1995 hit “This Is How We Do It.” “He was amazing!” said Van Der Beek, who also shared an extra bit of insider info: “When country stars karaoke, they don’t sing country.”
Because of the shenanigans, it sounds like country music has a new fan for life. “I’m always going to party with country stars from here on out,” said Van Der Beek. “They’re the most fun!”
