Over the years, Jada Pinkett Smith has dealt with her fair share of rumors. But the best way to combat them, she says, is to focus on the truth.
“The coping technique is knowing what the truth is – there’s no better technique,” she tells Net-A-Porter. “When you know that what’s going on in your house is so the opposite [of what’s being said], and you also know that when there’s mystery, people fill in the gaps, that’s okay.”
Pinkett Smith brushes aside reports of marital infidelities and rumors of an open marriage with husband Will Smith.
“And then you look back at it and look at how creative people can be, and it’s kind of entertaining. We can laugh because it’s so ridiculous,” the actress, 42, says.
Rumors about her daughter, Willow, however, are a more serious matter. When Willow, 13, posted an Instagram photo of herself and shirtless 20-year-old actor Moises Arias lying in bed, tabloids called the picture into question.
Smith fought the frenzy by speaking out, saying the situation was an innocent one, and seeing the photo as sexual (the two were not touching) is a projection.
“Just don’t pollute something that’s not dirty,” Pinkett Smith tells Net-A-Porter.
Family life is a source of strength for the Gotham star, who is gearing up to celebrate her 20th wedding anniversary with Smith and admits her idea of marriage has evolved over time.
“I think I had a very stuck idea of what a husband looks like, what a wife should be. Once I broke all of that, a whole new world opened for me and man, oh, man, I got to see him in all his glory. And so that’s what it’s evolved into. And I’m just ecstatic about it.”
